Every April, we celebrate the landmark 1968 Fair Housing Act law, which was passed only seven days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fair Housing Month serves as a reminder of the work we must all do to ensure every Californian has access to homeownership opportunities.
Over 50 years have passed, but there are still widening racial homeownership disparities. Investigations have revealed the role that implicit bias sometimes plays in the rental and home purchase process. Experts are still working to understand and address how different treatment or bias is often embedded into systems that support housing and homeownership.
Knowledge of fair housing laws isn’t only essential for a legally compliant business, it’s one of the best ways that REALTORS® can help address wealth and homeownership barriers that may be higher for people of color and other historically underserved groups.
Join C.A.R. for our first-ever Fair Housing Day on May 17 at 9 AM to learn what you can do to ensure that we can expand Californians’ opportunities to own a home.
