The data is clear, the homeownership rate for many California communities of color significantly lag that of white households. The disparity is most pronounced in the Black and Latinx communities with a homeownership gap that remains as large as it was when the Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968. And even though California’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) overall homeownership rate is relatively high, 60.2% according to the U.S. Census, the numbers don’t tell the full story. The AAPI community is incredibly diverse, including over fifty ethnicities and according to the Asian American Real Estate Association of America (AREAA), national AAPI subgroup homeownership
rates range from 30% to 68%.
