Dear CAR Member,
With summer now upon us, the risk of wildfires is upon us as well. I’m sure you’re aware that two of California’s biggest insurance carriers – State Farm and Allstate – announced last month that they will no longer sell new home insurance policies in the state because of wildfire risks and an increase in construction costs. They will continue to service and renew policies of existing clients in the state and offer new auto insurance policies.
Because this action will negatively impact your prospective buyers, your C.A.R. leadership team asked California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and United Policyholders, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of consumers, to present an insurance townhall briefing for REALTORS® to learn about California’s property and casualty insurance market and how the new Safer from Wildfires regulations can help homeowners and businesses qualify for insurance discounts. To learn how you can help your clients face the current fire insurance challenges, register here for this important virtual session held on Wednesday, July 26, 1 p.m.-2 p.m.
No doubt you’re getting questions from clients who may be impacted by insurance challenges. This is a good time for you to show your REALTOR® value and keep them informed on how to protect their homes, keep their insurance coverage and find new coverage when necessary. C.A.R. has made this easy for you by preparing shareable consumer one-sheets on different insurance topics, FAQs and other materials to help keep you and your clients informed.
As wildfires and heat waves become more commonplace concerns in the state, solutions from government and regulatory agencies, insurers, builders, and all in the housing industry are urgently required. The need for more housing, coupled with climate impacts that contribute to severe wildfires, droughts and floods mean the state continues to face challenges on multiple fronts. That’s why C.A.R.’s Center for California Real Estate is hosting a wide-ranging conversation focused on California’s water supply issues and how possible solutions may mitigate the looming crisis facing housing. Register here for the virtual panel held on Thurs., July 20, 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.
REALTOR® Safety Month isn’t until September but it’s never too early to remind you to stay safe. I’ve heard from some members that they have experienced unfortunate incidents while they were on the job. C.A.R. is here to help keep REALTORS® safe. Find a list of security resources on our new website – SmartZone.car.org – to help you prepare for and respond to dangerous or suspicious situations. While you’re on the site, be sure to look for wellness resources to help ensure your mental well-being as you navigate your career in a challenging market. Please take care of yourself so you can take care of your clients.
Lastly, this year’s theme for C.A.R.’s REimagine! Conference & Expo, taking place Sept. 19-21 in Anaheim, is “resiliency, adaptability and preparedness to take on the changing market.” I’m excited to reveal that our Wednesday keynote luncheon speaker is Nicole Malachowski, the first woman Thunderbird pilot and combat veteran. She’ll show how with the right mindset, individuals and teams can learn to harness the energy of these headwinds in their advantage. And on Thursday, be prepared for what’s to come with a can’t-miss keynote economic forecast of the 2024 Housing Market with C.A.R. Chief Economist Jordan Levine. You also don’t want to miss the opportunity to learn from industry experts in more than 50 sessions, walk the exhibit hall and find over 250 solution-filled exhibitor booths and build new connections with real estate pros from across the state. Register here for the free REimagine! Conference & Expo and add the two keynote luncheon tickets to your pass!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Branchini
2023 C.A.R. President
