The BEAR League asks that you share the following message with clients, friends and neighbors.
A Message from our Bears:
“We asked the BEAR League if they would help us send out a ‘heads-up’ out to all the Tahoe/Truckee folks about our upcoming winter nap-time. All of us are eating non-stop right now to gulp down as many calories as possible before we climb or crawl into our dens. Within the next two to three months most of us will be fat and sleepy and we’ll just want to take a nice long relaxing siesta. So, here’s where you all come in: We find the crawl spaces under your homes and cabins to be the absolute most perfect winter accommodations imaginable. It’s quiet, out of the wind, dark, cave-like, dry and usually no one bothers us. All of us bears know there is most often a great opportunity under most every human dwelling, and, if we can get under there, we crawl in, scout it out, (and if we like it) we redecorate so it’s ‘just right’. This means redesigning some of the duct-work, moving a few plumbing and gas lines, digging a nest and ‘borrowing’ most of the insulation to use as bedding.
Ahhhh, so nice…. makes us yawn just to think about it. Sometimes we break a few boughs from the nearby trees to bring in and add to our nest (some of us have scored in the past and found fluffy comforters hanging on the line outside, which we figured would be extra cozy so we dragged those in as well). Then it’s off to dream-land we go. You probably wouldn’t even know we’re there if not for an admittedly bad habit we have…. we snore and toss and turn. Other than that, and all the remodeling we did (and the fact that we don’t pay rent) we won’t be much of a bother and we’d like to say ‘Thanks’ for your hospitality. Sweet dreams, everyone.
And Now……A Message from the BEAR League: Everything the bears have said is the absolute truth. If you don’t want one of these guys under your house this winter (and sometimes, it could be an expectant Mama Bear who will give birth to cubs while she’s denning) you need to take their friendly ‘warning’ seriously and Make Sure Your Crawl Space Openings are Securely Locked up Tight… Before they see the “Vacancy Sign”. Every winter there are more and more bears who den under our homes and cabins. Flimsy doors or a board laying in front of the openings Do Not keep bears out. All winter long the BEAR League receives frantic calls from homeowners when they realize they have a very large ‘guest’ under their kitchen, living room or bedroom. Last winter alone—2021-2022—we awakened and moved almost 100 bears from crawl spaces in the Tahoe and Truckee areas, many were in South Lake Tahoe. (Some people insisted the bears could stay if there were no utilities they could damage). We do not evict Mama Bears who are due to give birth… that is illegal, thank God. Rather than having a bear possibly cause a huge amount of damage we vehemently recommend Securing Your Crawl Space Openings Now…Before one goes in. We can help with advice, just call. If a bear does get in, call us right away. We don’t kill or harm the bears, ever. BEAR League: 530-525-7297
Turn off that ‘Sleepy Bears Welcome’ sign now… and encourage your neighbors and friends to do the same. Thanks for listening to the Bears and the BEAR League.
