Forty-one percent of Americans believe their homeowners insurance policy protects them against mold, according to a new study from InsuranceQuotes.com. That’s more than two in five Americans, and an example of how often consumers remain unaware of what their homeowners insurance policies truly cover, InsuranceQuotes claims in its report. Mold mediation also is not covered, but many consumers surveyed were unaware of the lack of coverage on that issue. “This misconception could prove extremely costly,” said Laura Adams, senior insurance analyst, InsuranceQuotes.com. “Mold remediation can cost tens of thousands of dollars. It’s often not covered by homeowner’s insurance, especially if it was caused by neglected maintenance such as a leaky pipe.” Seventy-three percent of Americans are unaware that belongings stolen from cars can be covered by many homeowners insurance policies, while 51% did not know earthquake damage is usually not covered. Of those with policies, 17% said their decision to acquire an existing policy was based solely on price. Another 21% credited the service of their agent. Another twenty-two percent bought a policy based on a recommendation from a trusted source.
